VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's rugby team completed a 49-0 shutout of the University of Alberta to claim its first win of the season, Sept. 17 at Wallace Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maelle Reed wasted no time putting the Vikes on the board, registering her first try of the year 31 seconds into the match. A successful convert from Maggie MacKinnon gave UVic a 7-0 lead in the first minute of action.
- A quick set of passes by Victoria resulted in the ball landing back in the hands of Reed, who ran it in the rest of the way for her second try of the day and 12-0 Vikes lead in the 12th minute.
- Breaking away down the right side of the field, Carissa Norsten crossed the goal line and centred herself before touching ball down, extending the Vikes' lead to 17-0 in the 23rd minute.
- A quick pass from Avery Champion allowed Ella O'Regan to beat her defender's tackles and breakaway down the field, making a 50-metre run for the try and 22-0 UVic lead in the 26th minute.
- Fighting in contact for an open look, Zoe Williams found an opening and dove over the line for the try in the 31st minute, sending the match into halftime with the Vikes ahead, 27-0.
- Taking a long run down the left side of the field, Lucie Romeo opened the second-half scoring in the 46th minute with a try to bring the score to 32-0 for Victoria.
- Beginning with a run from Emily Findlay to put the Vikes in scoring position, a quick dump to Norsten resulted in the second try of the half for the Vikes in the 66th minute and 37-0 lead.
- O'Regan and Norsten scored similar tries to end the match, both sprinting down the right side of the field to score in the 72nd and 80th minutes, respectively. A successful convert from MacKinnon brought the final score to 49-0 for Victoria.
