VICTORIA - A 65-0 shutout of the University of Calgary brought the University of Victoria women's rugby team its fourth-straight Jenny Vincent Memorial Game victory, Sept. 21 at Wallace Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Vikes opened the scoring in the fifth minute courtesy of Avery Champion, who received the pass and stretched over the goal line for the first try of the day. A successful convert from Maggie MacKinnon made it 7-0 for UVic.
- Five minutes later, Carissa Norsten passed the ball to an in-motion Lucie Romeo, who then turned on the jets to propel herself past the Dinos' defenders and into the end zone for the try. A second convert from MacKinnon put the Vikes ahead, 14-0.
- Champion tallied her second try of the day in the 19th minute, while Zoe Williams registered her first try of the match in the 24th minute after diving in for the try to give Victoria a 24-0 lead.
- Ella O'Regan closed out the first-half scoring for the Vikes with a sprint up the right side of field in the 36th minute, giving Victoria a 29-0 lead at the half.
- The opening play of the second half consisted of Maelle Reed receiving a pass and taking off downfield, charging through Calgary defenders to score the try. A MacKinnon convert pushed the Vikes ahead, 36-0, in the 41st minute.
- MacKinnon scored all seven points for UVic in the 46th minute, getting the ball after a Vikes lineout and fighting through oncoming tacklers to touch the ball down for the try. Two more points from a successful conversion increased the Vikes' lead to 43-0.
- A push through the Dinos in the left corner of the field resulted in Soleil Brooks scoring the try in the 52nd minute, bringing the score to 48-0 for Victoria.
- Back-to-back tries from Justine Blatt-Janmaat in the 57th and 71st minutes added 10 points to UVic's lead, 58-0.
- The Vikes put one final try on the board after a massive run from Shaye Ogurek added five more points to their lead. A successful convert from Hadley MacPherson tacked on the final two points in the Vikes' win to finalize the score at 65-0.
