Men's soccer falls to Cougars in Canada West quarterfinals

Edmonton, Alta. - The University of Victoria men's soccer team's run in the Canada West playoffs came to an end with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Mount Royal Cougars, Oct. 25 at the University of Alberta's Foote Field.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Cougars go up early
  • Mount Royal stole the ball and broke away to score in the 14th minute and take a 1-0 lead, which would remain in place through halftime.
Weir keeps Vikes within one
  • Callum Weir tallied two saves in the first half, the first in the 11th minute on an open look from inside the box. In the 45th minute, Weir prevented the Cougars from taking a two-goal lead, extending his leg to make a diving save with his foot to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
Ritter West equalizes
  • In the 50th minute, the Vikes pulled even. A long ball was sent from Fin Tugwell from behind the midfield line to Jack Napier-Ganley just outside the box, who quickly tapped it to Jag Zaharia. Zaharia moved towards the end line before serving the ball to Harry Ritter West, who scored to pull the game even, 1-1, in the 50th minute.
  • Despite final scoring opportunities for both sides over the next 40 minutes, the game went into overtime after the score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation.
MRU wins it on penalty kick
  • A penalty kick awarded to the Cougars eight minutes into the second overtime period was capitalized on by MRU, who netted the game-winner to go up, 2-1.
Vikes can't capitalize on final chances
  • In the final minutes of overtime, the Vikes went on attack to try and equalize for a second time. Weir's initial shot resulted in three-straight corners for the Vikes, but Victoria was unable to capitalize and the Cougars came away with the win.
WORTH NOTING
  • The Vikes played down a man for the final five minutes of regulation and both overtime periods, as Ole Cameron was shown a second yellow in the 85th minute. Jack Napier-Ganley was shown a straight red in added time of the final overtime period, leaving the Vikes to play the final seconds short two players.
  • Weir registered six saves for the Vikes in net.
  • UVic has fallen to MRU in the Canada West playoffs for the second-straight year, after the Cougars claimed a 3-1 win in the semifinal round one year ago.
  • Victoria finished with the 20-17 lead in shots taken, but Mount Royal put eight of their shots on target to the Vikes' six.
  • Both teams were ranked nationally entering the match, with the Vikes holding the #9 spot in the U SPORTS Top 10, while the Cougars were ranked #10.
  • The Vikes hold a 9-3-4 record after a 9-2-4 regular season and 0-1 playoff records.
