Women's rugby drops heartbreaker to UBC in U SPORTS final

Charlottetown, P.E.I. – The University of Victoria women's rugby team fell in heartbreaking fashion in the U SPORTS championship final to the University of British Columbia, 8-3, Nov. 3 at the UPEI Alumni Canada Games Field.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes battle, but 3-0 scoreline stays in place most of the game
  • A penalty goal by UBC in the fourth minute put the Thunderbirds ahead, 3-0. That score would remain in place until the 65th minute, when UBC scored a try for the 8-0 lead.
  • Though the Vikes battled to get on the board, a knock on or uncaught ball recovered by UBC stifled their scoring chances throughout the game.
  • The Vikes defence held the Thunderbirds to just eight points, marking UBC's lowest-scoring game of the year.
Chiappetta puts points on the board for the Vikes Vikes run out of time, fall to UBC
  • Running out of time to make something happen, the Vikes were unable to put a try on the board in the final minutes of play.
Victoria repeats as silver medallists
  • The Vikes will bring the silver medal back to Victoria for the second-straight season, also finishing as the national runners-up in 2023. The second-place showing ties for the program's best finish at nationals.
