Vancouver, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's rugby team finished in second place with a 4-1 record at the Vancouver stop of the Canada West 7s series, Feb. 9-10 at Thunderbird Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Day 1
Victoria 33, Calgary 7
- Shaye Ogurek, Larah Wright, and Maggie MacKinnon each scored a try in the first half for the Vikes. Along with three MacKinnon converts, the Vikes jumped out to a 21-0 lead.
- A penalty try given to the Dinos brought the score to 21-7 in favour of the Vikes at halftime.
- Elle Douglas and Macy Wiebe each tallied a try in the second half, and with two successful converts by Douglas, the Vikes claimed a 33-7 win.
Victoria 31, Trinity Western 7
- Shaye Ogurek once again opened the scoring for the Vikes, putting Victoria ahead 5-0 with a try in the first minute of play.
- Tries from Emily Findlay, Emmie Pierce, and Larah Wright along with three Maggie MacKinnon converts put the Vikes in front, 26-0, at the end of the first half.
- Trinity Western struck first in the second half, putting seven points on the board and cutting Victoria's lead to 26-7.
- MacKinnon put the final points of the match on the board with a try to seal the win, 31-7.
Victoria 33, Alberta 0
- Emily Findlay scored her second try of the day for the first points of the game. Adding two points from Maggie MacKinnon's convert kick, the Vikes took a 7-0 lead in the first minute of action.
- Larah Wright's third try of the day, along with a MacKinnon convert, doubled the Vikes' lead to 14-0 in the first half.
- MacKinnon recorded seven points on her own with the try and convert, resulting in the 21-0 Vikes lead at the half.
- A second try from Wright and first of the game from Emmie Pierce, along with a convert by Elle Douglas finalized the Vikes' win at 33-0.
Day 2
Victoria 21, Lethbridge 7
- Seven points from Maggie MacKinnon opened the game scoring, putting the Vikes ahead 7-0.
- Lethbridge tied the game two minutes later, 7-7.
- Two tries by Lucie Romeo and two converts from MacKinnon put the Vikes ahead 21-7 at the end of the first half. With no second half scoring, the Vikes came away with the win.
UBC 17, Victoria 7
- UBC scored the only points of the first half, taking a 5-0 lead into halftime after a try.
- A try from Larah Wright and successful convert by Maggie MacKinnon opened the second-half scoring, putting the Vikes in front, 7-5.
- Two tries and a convert by the Thunderbirds gave UBC the 17-7 win.
