Vikes open season with shutout of WolfPack

VICTORIA – Though the weather was less than ideal for a season-opening match, the University of Victoria men's soccer team did not let the rain get in their way, shutting out Thompson Rivers University, 3-0, at Centennial Stadium to open the season, Aug. 23.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Sagaste puts the Vikes up 1-0
  • Taking a penalty kick earned when Matthew Pearse was taken down in the box on a breakaway, Javier Sagaste missed the penalty kick but quickly snagged his own rebound, sending it to the back of the net in the 21st minute for the 1-0 Vikes lead.
Pearse doubles the Vikes' lead
  • Stopping an attack by the WolfPack, Mattheus Achadinha took control of the ball and booted it to a waiting Pearse down field. Bringing the ball to the top of the six-yard box, Pearse shot it to the back right corner of the net for the 2-0 Vikes lead in the 36th minute.
Pearse secures the brace
  • During TRU's attempt to clear the ball away from their goalkeeper, Pearse managed to swipe the ball from the WolfPack defender at the top of the box, quickly firing off a high shot that hit the top post before bouncing over the line to score his second goal of the game and seal the Vikes' win, 3-0, in the 57th minute.
Weir gets the shutout
  • Vikes goalkeeper Callum Weir tallied two saves in the shutout win.
FROM THE PITCH – Matthew Pearse
"Coming in to tonight, everyone was just electric, so excited. Knowing how well we did last season, that excitement has carried over.

"My goal was to start off the season right. Bury every chance. Tonight, I got in the right positions, and got lucky on some.

"Heading into Sunday, it's going to be the same energy all around. The boys [team] are excited, and we're all up for the test."

WORTH NOTING
  • UVic outshot TRU 12-6, and also put five shots on target to the WolfPack's two.
  • The Vikes have shutout the WolfPack in two-straight season-opening contests, also doing so in 2023 with a 1-0 win in Kamloops, B.C.
  • Victoria opens the season with a 1-0-0 record, while Thompson Rivers starts the year at 0-1-0.
