Vikes and Timberwolves open series with scoreless draw

Prince George, B.C. – The University of Victoria men's soccer team's match against the University of Northern British Columbia ended in a scoreless draw, Aug. 30, at Masich Place.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Crossbar stifles Vikes' first half scoring chances
  • The Vikes had two solid scoring chances in the 28th and 29th minutes, however, shots from Javier Sagaste and Yassin Guitouni, respectively, went off the crossbar and stayed out of the net. Though the Vikes wrangled the deflections on both attempts, the UNBC goalkeeper made saves on both follow-up shots.
Larson nearly breaks through in the second half
  • A pass into the box from Jack Napier-Ganley found Evan Larson, who took the UNBC goalkeeper one-on-one in the 65th minute. However, the Timberwolves' goalie managed to get a foot on the ball to make the save and keep the game scoreless.
The crossbar strikes again in extra time
  • Napier-Ganley's scoring chance four minutes into stoppage time went off the crossbar, keeping the score at 0-0.
Vikes defence has strong showing
  • The Vikes' defence limited UNBC to just two shots on goal in 90 minutes of play. The Timberwolves did not register a shot on goal until the 83rd minute, which was saved by Vikes goalkeeper Callum Weir.
WORTH NOTING
  • The Vikes outshot the Timberwolves 20-4, and 12-2 in shots on goal.
  • Matthew Pearse led the Vikes with four shots, putting all four on target. Harry Ritter West finished with two shots on the night, putting both shots on goal.
  • The Vikes move to 2-0-1 on the year with the draw, while UNBC moves to 0-2-1.
