VICTORIA – In its final home game of the 2024 season, the University of Victoria women's rugby team blanked the University of Calgary, 80-0, Sept. 29 at Wallace Field.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Top Vikes scorers put Victoria on the board
  • Maya Addai and Carissa Norsten, the two leading scorers for the Vikes, each scored a try to open the game. Addai got the ball down in the third minute while Norsten scored in the sixth to give Victoria a quick 10-0 lead.
Wright records her first points of the year
  • Running down the left side of the field, Larah Wright carved through Calgary defenders over to the centre of the field to score her first try of the year in the 17th minute. Along with a convert by Vanessa Chiappetta, the Vikes' lead increased to 17-0.
  • Four minutes later, Maddy Grant and Wright passed back and forth to move the ball down the field, and ended with Wright scoring her second try of the day. Another Chiappetta convert made the score 24-0 for Victoria.
Three more Vikes tries close first half scoring
  • Getting in the in-goal in the 25th minute, a quick fake from Kira Peary allowed her to swerve around the Dinos defenders for the try, bringing the Vikes' lead to 29-0.
  • Quick feet by both Addai and Norsten resulted in a second try for them both, with Addai scoring in the 32nd minute and Norsten in the 38th. Chiappetta put the through the uprights on Addai's try to bring UVic's lead to 41-0 at halftime.
Five Vikes score first tries of the season in second half

  • After a Peary penalty goal added three points to Victoria's lead in the 51st minute, Hana Veysi powered through the hoard of players near the try line to score her first try as Vike in the 55th minute, making the score 61-0 for UVic.
  • Starting with Blackmore getting the ball to Wright, Wright swung it to Emmie Pierce who ran it in for her first try of the year in the 68th minute. Chiappetta was successful on the convert to extend Victoria's lead to 68-0.
  • Gwen King got her first try of the year in the 75th minute, taking the ball from the centre line all the way to the in-goal area for the 73-0 Vikes lead in the 75th minute.
  • Closing the game's scoring, a setup from Regan Casey paved the way for Angie Olukunmi to get over the line and touch the ball down for her first try of the year in the 79th minute. Chiappetta made a final convert to finalize the Vikes' win at 80-0.
WORTH NOTING
  • The 80 points scored by the Vikes are the most for the program since back-to-back 82-0 wins to open the 2017 15s season against Alberta and UBC, Sept. 17-24.
  • The nine try scorers, including five with their firsts of the season, mark the most in a single game for the Vikes this season.
  • Vanessa Chiappetta recorded six converts in the win, which ties for the most in a single Canada West game this season.
  • The Vikes move to 4-0 on the year with the win, while the Dinos fall to 0-5 with the loss.
