Vancouver, BC – The University of Victoria women's rugby team battled the University of British Columbia to a 15-13 defeat and secured a U SPORTS silver medal on Nov. 2.
 
Newsome opened the scoring

• After a tough offensive push to the edge of the try zone, the Thunderbirds were assessed a penalty. Olivia Newsome stepped up and split the uprights to open the scoring and grab an early 3-0 for the Vikes.

 
Thunderbirds scored the first try of the game

• The Thunderbirds were the first on the board with a try. UBC capitalized on a loose ball as they rushed down the field and into the try zone for a 7-3 lead.

 
The second half began with a UBC penalty goal

• Early in the second half, UBC was awarded a penalty goal opportunity. The UBC kicker converted and added three points to the UBC lead.

 
The Vikes countered with their first try

• Justien Blatt-Janmaat executed a beautiful fake pass and offloaded the ball to Ella O'Regan to finish off the try. The Vikes cut the UBC lead to 10-8 as the game entered the 50^th minute.

 
Dramatically, Victoria broke through to take the lead.

• The Vikes continued to fight. In the 67^th minute, the offence slowly battled for ground closer to the try zone. The pressure paid off as Eden Kilgour received a pass and broke through two UBC defenders to give the Vikes the lead as the game neared a close.

• In the last seconds of the game, the Thunderbirds burst down the sideline to break into the try zone to capture the lead and win.

 
Notables

• The Nike Player of the Game was awarded the Emily Findlay for her efforts in the hard-fought battle.
• Justine Blatt-Janmaat, Carissa Norsten, Sierra Gillis, Olivia Newsome, and Emily Findlay were named tournament all-stars for their strong performances at the U SPORTS Championship.

 
The Vikes will finish the season having won the Canada West Championship and a silver medal at the U SPORTS Championship.
