Vikes weekly preview - September 16, 2025

Women's Field Hockey (2-0)
 
Saturday, September 20 & Sunday, September 21
Vikes at UBC Thunderbirds (2-0), Vancouver, BC. 11a.m.
 
Last Week Recap:
  • The Vikes women's field hockey team opened the season strong with two shutout victories, 5-0 and 3-0, against the University of Calgary, Sep. 13-14.
  • Libby Hogg earned Canada West Player of the Week honours for her three-goal weekend performance. Defensively, she played a large part in shutting out the Dinos in both games while putting on a show offensively.
  • Jaden Dawson contributed a two-goal performance of her own in the win Saturday, while Molly Harris had a goal in both games of the weekend.
  • Opening the scoring on Sunday, Sadie Lee netted her first goal of the season.
  • Anais Chace shut to door on the Dinos, not allowing a goal in either game.
  • The Vikes and Thunderbirds both put their undefeated records on the line as they face off this coming weekend. A season ago, UVic and UBC split the season series 2-2 with two games being decided in a shootout.
 
 
Men's Rugby (1-0)

Vikes against UBC Thunderbirds (1-0-1), Wallace Field, Victoria, B.C., 2:30p.m.
 
Last Week Recap:
  • The Vikes opened their season strong as they took down the Pacific Pride 43-36, Sep. 13 at Wallace Field.
  • The Pride held a 31-12 halftime lead, forcing the Vikes to pull off a dramatic second half comeback.
  • Thoran Koyote dazzled with a two try performance, while Adam Doane contributed his first try of the season.
  • Keegan Neary, making his Vikes debut, scored the go-ahead points late in the second half.
  • The Vikes will host UBC in the first leg of the Wightman Boot. This will begin the quest for qualification into the 2025 Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship.

Last Week Recap:
  • The Vikes took down the University of Alberta 1-0, Sep. 14 at Centennial Stadium.
  • As play picked up in the 14th minute, Takin Keshavarz was on the receiving end of a through ball by Ole Cameron, burying his first goal of the season as he put the Vikes ahead 1-0.
  • Callum Weir held his ground, saving several Golden Bear scoring opportunities, earning his first shutout of the season.
  • In the latest U SPORTS Top 10 rankings, the Vikes men's soccer team continues to be ranked N0. 8. They have held this ranking for three weeks in a row.
  • In their matchup with the Pronghorns last year, the two teams played to a 0-0 draw. Historically, the Vikes have success in this matchup. Holding a program record of 8-1-3 against the Pronghorns.

Last Week Recap:
  • The Vikes downed the University of Lethbridge 55-12, Sep. 13 at Community Stadium.
  • The scoring came early and often for the Vikes. It was highlighted by Carissa Norsten and Vanessa Chiappetta baffling Pronghorn defenders to score two tries each.
  • The depth was on display as seven different Vikes recorded tries in this high scoring affair.
  • The Vikes are currently riding a 31-game win streak against the Pandas in both 15s and 7s. In their last matchup, the Vikes dominated with an emphatic 55-14 win.

Season Preview
  • Coming off a third-place team finish at the 2025 Canadian University/College Championship, the Vikes look to build on a strong campaign last season.
  • Brynne Davies, Lana Rummel, and Cindy Koira return to the team after finishing 6th, 11th, and T-12 in the Championships last season.
  • The Vikes head to Washington looking to get off to a hot start in the new season. The SMU invitational is a tournament the Vikes last played in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, where they finished 5th and 6th as a team.
