Extra time goal gives Vikes point against Timberwolves

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria men's soccer team saw an extra time goal from Matthew Pearse to earn the draw against the University of Northern British Columbia, 1-1, Sept. 6 at Centennial Stadium to close the weekend series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Victoria and UNBC scoreless after first half
  • Through 45 minutes of play, the Vikes and Timberwolves remained scoreless.
  • The Vikes saw a set of scoring chances in the final five minutes, first with a penalty shot opportunity that was saved by the UNBC goalkeeper, then by a corner kick that that was headed by Fin Tugwell that was once again saved by T'Wolves keeper to send the game into halftime scoreless.
Pearse equalizes in extra time
  • Nearly two minutes in to the five added by the officials, the Vikes equalized. The initial lob in from Jack Napier-Ganley was punched away by the UNBC goalkeeper, but went straight to the foot of Matthew Pearse who sent it to the back of the net for the equalizer and to bring the final score to 1-1.
WORTH NOTING
  • Matthew Pearse's goal marked his second of the season. He now leads the Vikes with four points on the year.
  • Callum Weir recorded three saves in goal for the Vikes.
  • The Vikes finished the night with the 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Victoria remains unbeaten on the season at 4-0-2, while UNBC moves to 3-2-1 on the year after the draw.
