Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Chase Carter

Weir collects another shutout in 1-0 win over UNBC

Prince George, BC – The University of Victoria men's soccer team remained in strong form as they seized a 1-0 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves on Oct. 23 at Masich Place Stadium.

Victoria controlled much of the play but had to remain patient to find the breakthrough.
  • The Vikes dictated possession throughout the evening, outshooting UNBC 14-5 and holding an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Victoria generated several quality opportunities in the opening half but was unable to solve the UNBC goalkeeper despite sustained pressure.
  • The Vikes carried that pressure into the second half, continuing to test the Timberwolves' back line while limiting chances at the other end.

The breakthrough finally came late in the match.
  • Victoria broke the deadlock in the 79th minute when Wesley Jones found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season and third in the last three games. Jack Napier-Ganley picked up the assist on the game-winning goal with his quality cross to set up the chance.
  • The Vikes remained organized and dominant defensively over the final minutes to secure all three points and another clean sheet.

Notables
  • Callum Weir earned the clean sheet and made two saves. The Vikes have now posted back-to-back clean sheets and have allowed just one goal in their last four matches.
  • The victory moves the Vikes to 8-4-2 in Canada West play, while UNBC falls to 2-7-6.

The Vikes close out the regular season on Oct. 25 when they travel to Abbotsford, BC, to face the Fraser Valley Cascades. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. as Victoria looks to build momentum heading into the Canada West playoffs.
