Vikes tie program record with eight goal performance

Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria men's soccer team delivered its most dominant attacking performance of the season, scoring eight goals from seven different players in an 8-0 victory over MacEwan on Oct. 3 at Centennial Stadium.

The Vikes erupted for seven first-half goals to put the match out of reach before halftime.
  • It took roughly eleven minutes for the Vikes to settle in, and unfortunately for the Griffins, that meant the offensive floodgates were about to open. Griffin Leach opened the scoring in the 12th minute as the Vikes began to click around the goal.
  • Ole Cameron got in on the scoring as he found the back of the net on a shot that fooled the Griffins' goalkeeper. Cameron's goal came just six minutes after Leach's.
  • In the 21st minute, Aiden Grew scored his first goal of the season to make it 3-0 before Evan Larson added his team-leading fifth goal of the campaign less than a minute later.
  • A flurry spanning five minutes saw the Vikes blow the game wide open. Felipe Morales Moya struck twice in a span of just over three minutes, while Fin Tugwell added his first goal of the season as Victoria carried a 7-0 advantage into the break.

Victoria controlled every aspect of the match from start to finish.
  • Ole Cameron scored just four minutes out of halftime, marking his second of the game and later added an assist for a three-point performance.
  • Griffin Leach's performance was a highlight for the Vikes as he recorded a goal and two assists, while Felipe Morales Moya had a "man of the match" winning performance as he contributed two goals and an assist.
  • The Vikes outshot MacEwan 20-3 and held an 18-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Victoria's goalkeepers combined for the clean sheet, with Callum Weir making two saves before Matthew McConnach closed out the final 45 minutes.

Notables:
  • The Vikes remain hot as they sweep the weekend and move to 5-3-1. MacEwan remains winless as they move to 0-9-1.
  • The Vikes matched the program record for largest margin of victory with an 8-0 win, equaling a result set against UNBC on Sept. 8, 2012.
  • Seven different Vikes found the scoresheet in the victory.
  • The Vikes outshot MacEwan 20-3 and held an 18-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The Vikes will return to action on Oct. 9 when they host the Fraser Valley Cascades at Centennial Stadium.
