Biography University of Victoria women’s field hockey head Coach Lynne Beecroft lost seven players from her 1990 starting lineup including, Carmen Kirkness, Erin Biddlecombe, Terri McLeod, Kolette Bourne, Rochelle Low, Lauralee Kopeck and Milena Gaiga, many of who competed in the Olympic Games qualifying tournament. The rookie-laden team grew and exceeded expectations, as the team played throughout the season.
During the Canada West regular season the Vikettes travelled three weekends for regular-season tournaments. At the second regular-season tournament held in Edmonton, Alberta, the Vikettes won three of the four games and tied the last, giving them their best regular season showing. However, it was not enough to put them in first place. UVic finished with 16 points, two points shy of the University of British Columbia (UBC).
Four Vikettes were named Canada West all-stars:
Jessica McAlpine,
Sue Reid,
Gillian Szamosi and
Robin Vinge.
Flying east to Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Vikettes entered the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) national championship tournament ranked 4
th as a wild card. Their round-robin pool consisted of York University Yoewomen and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, who won the Ontario Conference Championship with an impressive 12-0-1 record. In two fierce opening games, the young Vikettes defeated the Yoewomen 3-1 and the Blues 2-1. Shutting down some of the top teams, the Vikettes persevered into the semifinals disappointing the University of New Brunswick 2-1 in penalty strokes.
The Vikettes were given the opportunity to redeem their Canada West pride as they met defending CIAU Champions, the UBC Thunderbirds in the finals. In an anticipating battle between both teams, the Vikettes defeated the Thunderbirds in penalty strokes. The Vikettes conquered as they flicked goals past UBC keeper Anna Helmer to hoist the CIAU national championship trophy for the fourth time.
For this inexperience team, this CIAU National Championship tournament was one of the most memorable victories for the Vikettes. McApline, Reid and Szamosi were named CIAU all-stars. McApline was also named CIAU first team all-Canadian, while Reid was named to the second all-Canadian team.
