Bruce Wilson (Head Coach)

Biography
In his 17th season as the Vikes head coach, Bruce Wilson led the UVic Vikes men’s soccer team to the program’s first national championship title since 1996, increasing the record to four national titles.

Starting the regular season with a tough loss against Trinity Western University, the Vikes went undefeated in their next 10 games, ending the regular season with an impressive record of 8-2-2. This ranked them second in the Canada West standings behind rivals Trinity Western.

In the Canada West final four, which featured Trinity Western, Calgary and Alberta, the Vikes then defeated the defending CIS and Canada West champions University of Alberta Golden Bears 4-1 and advanced to the gold medal game against Calgary. Two goals from Kingsley Jones (Coquitlam, BC) helped the Vikes defeat the University of Calgary Dinos. The Vikes men’s soccer team became the 2004 Canada West champions.

Goalkeeper Trevor Stiles, defender Jagminder Sajan, and midfielders Will Moore and Jones were named Canada Wes First Team All-Stars. Defender Terry Krueger and midfielder Sean Battistoni were named Canada West Second Team All-Stars. Stiles was also named Canada West most valuable player (MVP).

The Vikes faced the University of Western Ontario Mustangs in their first match at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS, formally CIAU). Goals from Sajan (Nanaimo, BC) and Battistoni (Victoria, BC) helped the Vikes come from behind to defeat the Mustangs. The next day, a scoreless draw in their game against University of Montreal was enough for the Vikes to advance to the gold medal championship match.

Facing McGill University in the finals, Carl Speed (Victoria, BC) put the Vikes upfront but McGill would equalize before the end of the first half. In the second half, McGill could not get past the Vikes goalkeeper Stiles (Victoria, BC). A goal each from Battistoni and Patrick Gawrys, for the Vikes, in the 76th and 86th minutes berthed the Vikes to a CIS national banner and winning the program’s fourth Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy.

Many Vikes were named to CIS All-Star teams including Stiles, Sajan, Moore, Krueger, Battistoni and Jones who made up six members of the CIS Tournament XI All-Star team. Battistoni was names CIS championship MVP, while teammate Stiles was named CIS All-Canadian.
