(Assistant Coach Novices) Biography The University of Victoria women’s rowing crew successfully captured their second consecutive Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC) national title. This would mark the programs ninth banner under head coach
Rick Crawley. Foreshadowing the success of the 2011–2012 season, the women swept the competition at the fourth annual Western Canadian Championships. The women displayed their elite talent by winning each event and the overall Western Championship title on October 23, 2011.
The Vikes women’s varsity eight rowed to a victory time of 6:33.57, 16 seconds ahead of second-place University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds. The women’s eight crew included,
Claire McCormick, Ruby Walser, Teresa Berkholtz, Alyssa Weninger, Lara Kemp, Antje von Seydlitz, Erika Shaw, Kayla Smith and coxswain
Anna Brunizer. At the Canadian University Rowing Championships (Nov 5-6, 2011), held by the University of Western Ontario in London, ON, crew captain
Leanne Fells and
Alex Meiklejohn struck gold in the women’s lightweight double with a time of 7:32.54. The women’s lightweight four,
Stefanie Miklosovic, Ingrid Braul, Fells, Meiklejohn and cox
Cay-Lee Honey defeated host team University of Western Ontario Mustangs to win the gold with a time of 7:13.04. Braul also went home with a gold medal in the women’s lightweight single event (8:10.95). Von Seydlitz added to the Vikes point total with a bronze medal finish in the women’s single, while Shaw and lightweight double’s teammate Smith came fourth.
Following the CURCs, the Vikes hosted the Monster Erg (Indoor National Championships) where Braunizer dominated the U-23 lightweight event and Braul won the senior A lightweight event. Von Seydlitz’s success in the senior event also was a key highlight of the meet.
Coming off a gold medal performance at the Elk Lake Spring Regatta, the women’s varsity eight UBC and UVic crews came together for their annual Brown Cup Challenge (March 24, 2012). Demonstrating their consistent elite talent, the Vikes women’s varsity eight defeated the Thunderbirds by a margin of 0.63 seconds in the lengthy 3500-meter boat race modeled off the historic Oxford–Cambridge race. Braul, McCormick, Weninger, Shaw, Kemp, Watt, Walser, Berkholtz and (cox) Smith captured the programs 18
th title with a winning time of 9:58.06.
At the Rowing Canada Awards banquet, many members of the Vikes rowing team were honoured. Vikes women’s assistant coach Scott Feddery was honoured as the male coach of the year. Fifth year Fells and Meiklejohn were announced as female sweep crew of the year for their five gold medals, including three at the Royal Canadian Henley meet and two at the CURCs.
