Biography
Heading into the 1999-2000 season, the University of Victoria’s women’s basketball team had won seven national championships, including the most recent victory in the 1997-98 season. Entering her 21st season as head coach, Kathy Shields led an experienced team, eight of which were members of the 1998 championship team: Lindsay Brooke, Kim Johnson, Megan Dalziel, Emily King, Janet McLachlan, Joanna Holdsworth, Lindsay McDonald and Kim Oslund.
The Vikettes won the Canada West conference with a regular season record of 18–2. The University of Calgary finished second (16–4), followed by the University of Alberta (15–5). Between November 13, 1999 and January 21, 2000 the UVic women’s basketball team had a 10 game winning streak, out-shooting their opponents 800-516. On November 26 the Vikettes had a game high against Brandon University, winning 92-52. They shot a team shooting percentage of 60.5.
In 20 games McLachlan led the Vikettes in shooting with a percentage of 52.2. Dalziel offensive skills boosted the team’s three-pointers as she sunk 26 baskets in 20 games. Combined, McLachlan (108) and Dalziel (122) led the team in rebounds with a collective total of 230.
Brooke’s on court teamwork and leadership earned her 94 assists in 20 games, while Anderson’s defensive skills tallied up 67 steals, leading the Vikettes, followed by Brooke with 62 steals in 20 games.
The Vikettes team dynamic skills brought head coach Shields running total to 320 wins in 370 games. Brooke and Anderson were named Canada West First Team All-Stars, while McLachlan was named Canada West Second Team All-Star. Other receiving all-star votes included Vikettes Dalziel and Johnson.
The women travelled to the University of Alberta for the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) national championship tournament. In their first game, the Vikettes played Memorial University from St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador. UVic defeated Memorial 71-59; McLachlan was named player of the game. The Vikettes than defeated host team Alberta 73-58 to berth them to the gold medal game; Dalziel was named player of the game. With one game to go, the Vikettes played Canada West rivals the University of Calgary for the national title. Brooke was named player of the gold medal game as the Vikettes overpowered Calgary 57-41 to capture the women’s basketball program’s eighth national banner.
Brooke was the lone Vikette to be named CIAU First Team All-Canadian. She was also dubbed CIAU championship tournament most valuable player (MVP). McLachlan and Brooke were named CIAU all-stars.
In an incredible 1999-2000 season, the University of Victoria’s Athletic and Recreation program won five national titles including, women’s cross country, women’s field hockey, women’s & men’s rowing and women’s basketball.
