Biography:
For the first time since 1977, the University of Victoria’s men’s basketball head coach Ken Shields and his 1984-85 team were unable to finish first in the Canada West standings as they fell second to the Lethbridge Pronghorns. This setback, however, did not stop the Vikings as they bounced back and claimed the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) national throne for the sixth consecutive season.
The Vikings finished second in the Canada West regular season standings behind the Lethbridge Pronghorns with a 7-3 record. Although the Vikings managed to make it to the Canada West finals, they were unable to win the conference title for the first time in eight years. Two Vikings were named to the Canada West All-Star teams including centre Cord Clemens to the first team and fourth-year forward Dave Sheehan to the second team.
The Canada West silver medal was enough for the Vikings to qualify for the CIAU playoffs. Determined to recapture the CIAU national crown, the UVic men’s basketball team made it to the championship final four hosted by Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The Vikes then defeated Manitoba in an overtime match to challenge Waterloo for the national title. Redeeming their playoff status, the Vikings ran the court against Waterloo to a convincing 93-79 win to claim their sixth consecutive CIAU national banner.
Third-year Phil Ohl, Clemens, and Sheehan was dubbed CIAU tournament All-Stars. Captain Ohl was also named to the CIAU All-Canadian second team and CIAU tournament most valuable player (MVP), accepting the Jack Donohue Trophy. For six straight years, the Vikings have been recipients of the Jack Donohue Trophy.
