Biography:
In the 1983-84 season, Ken Shields' University of Victoria men's basketball team had an expectional year as the men brought home their fifth consecutive Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) national title. At the helm of the men's basketball program, head coach Shields produced one of the best men's basketball programs in Canada.
The Vikings won every single regular season game as they went undefeated to challenge for the Canada West conference title. They faced the University of Alberta Pandas in the first round and buzzed past them in a 99-75 score-line. Host team the, University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, were also unable to stop the Vikings' winning streak, as Shields and his team claimed their seventh consecutive Canada West title and qualified for the national championship.
Senior guard Eli Pasquale was named Canada West First Team All-Star alongside forward Greg Wiltjer. Forward Ken Larson was also named to the Canada West Second All-Star team.
At the CIS national championships hosted in Halifax Nova Scotia, by Dalhousie University, the Vikings continued their undefeated reign as they made it past the post-season CIS playoffs and into the Final Four to challenge for the national throne.
Facing Brandon University Bobcats in the national showdown, the Vikings defeated the Bobcats 70-62 to earn their fifth consecutive CIS national championship. The 1983-84 season marked the second time Ken Shields' Vikings went undefeated throughout the entire season.
Two Vikings were honoured as First Team All-Canadians, including Pasquale and Wiltjer. Pasquale was also credited for his individual performances as he captured the prestigious Mike Moser Memorial trophy as the outstanding player in the country. Wiltjer was honoured as CIAU tournament most valuable player (MVP - Jack Donohue Trophy), marking the fifth consecutive year a UVic athlete won CIAU MVP.
Throughout his five-year reign, Eli Pasquale was a true leader on the Vikes men's basketball team. From Sudbury
Ontario, Pasquale received one most outstanding Mike Moser trophy award, two Jack Donohue MVP trophies and was on multiple Canada West and CIAU All-Star teams. In 1984, after his varsity career, Pasquale was drafted by the Seattle Supersonics. As one of Canada's best basketball players, this two-time Olympian represented Canada for 15 years. In honour of his excellence and dedication to the UVic basketball program, Pasquales jersey number 13 has been retired in the Ken & Kathy Shields Court. His contribution to basketball currently continues within his local community of Victoria, BC.
