Head Coach: Ken Shields
Biography: Entering his 10
th season, head coach Ken Shields has guided the University of Victoria’s men’s basketball team to six consecutive Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) national championships. In all six years a Viking has been honoured as the CIAU most valuable player, while Shields himself has been honoured as Canada West coach of the year and CIAU coach of the year four times.
Although the Vikings had won the overall Canada West conference, they failed to win the Canada West championship banner. At the conference semifinal playoffs, the Vikings played the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, but lost by one basket. The final score was 78-76 in favour of the Huskies. University of Lethbridge, who finished second in the Canada West standings, won the Canada West championship, defeating the Huskies.
The Vikings 9-1 Canada West regular season record was enough to advance to the west regional playoffs where they competed against St. Francis Xavier (St. FX) and Lethbridge for the rights to challenge the CIAU title.
Hosted by the University of Lethbridge, Victoria defeated St. FX 80–72 and Lethbridge 79–59. The two victories berthed the Vikings to the CIAU national tournament.
Shieds and the Vikings travelled to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where Dalhousie University hosted the 1985-86 CIAU national tournament. Controlling the court, the Vikings defeated Canada West rivals Saskatchewan Huskies 78-70, proceeding the Vikings into the championship game. With a final score of 79-59 the UVic men’s basketball team won the 1985-86 CIAU national championship banner.
Cord Clemens and
Lloyd Scrubb were dubbed CIAU tournament All-Stars. Clemens was also named to the CIAU All-Canadian second team and was recognized as the CIAU’s most valuable player (MVP). Clemens’ recorded a game high on January 31, 1986 at Lethbridge with 14 defensive rebounds, leading the team to a 70-63 victory.
The Works of Ken Shields The 1985-86 national championship was the last CIAU banner head coach Ken Shields won for the University of Victoria men’s basketball program. In 13 long years as head coach (1976-1989), Shields produced seven consecutive national championship teams (1979-80 through to 1985-86), multiple MVP’s, outstanding player award recipients and countless CIAU All-Stars. After his time at UVic, this four time CIAU coach of the year succeeded men’s national head coach Jack Donohue. Shields' contribution to the Canadian basketball national program between 1990-94 led the team to a seventh place finish at the 1994 FIBA World Basketball Championships. In 1993 Shields donated the Ken Shields Award (basketball, academics & community service) to the CIAU. The award is presented to a player who exhibits outstanding achievements in basketball, academics and community involvement. In recognition of the commitment and excellence Ken and Kathy exemplified, the University of Victoria named their McKinnon gymnasium the Ken & Kathy Shields Court in 2007.
