Biography
The University of Victoria women’s field hockey Vikettes made history at the 1984 Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union  (CIAU) national championship tournament and began a legacy of championships for UVic’s women’s field hockey program. Head coach Sandy Drever  and assistant coach Lynne Beecroft led the talented group of dedicated athletes to an undefeated 10-0-3 season, scoring 41 goals and allowing only two.

The Vikettes veteran roster included national team player Nancy Charlton and jr. national team players, Sara Ballantyne, Moria Hill, Islay Baird, Sue Bond and Joan Denroche.  The 1984 season also welcomed back Eiko Tabata, Marty Boan, Annie Evamy and goaltender Alanna Armstrong.

After capturing the Canada West conference banner, Ballantyne, Charlton, Bond, Evamy and Tabata were named Canada West All-Stars. Tabata led Canada West conference with 15 goals in 12 games. Evamy followed with 10 goals and Baird with nine goals. Ballantyne also secured a position on the top-10 scoring list with three goals.

The Vikettes travelled to the mainland for the 1984 CIAU national championship tournament hosted by the University of British Columbia (UBC). The Vikettes went 2-0 in round-robin play defeating the University of Waterloo Warriors 4-1 and St. Mary’s University Huskies 3-0. Winning their first two games the team faced UBC rivals in the semifinals. After regulation time, the game was tied 1-1, forcing over-time. The Vikettes secured their win with three goals from Ballantyne, Tabata and Evamy in 20 minutes of over-time.

With adrenaline pumping the Vikettes prepared to face York University for the CIAU title. In a nail biting game Tabata scored the lone goal, lifting the Vikes to their first national title and UVic’s  eighth athletic national title.

Three players were named to the tournament 11 all-star roster: Charlton, Tabata and Ballantyne. Following nationals, Drever retired as head coach. Drever started what would become one of UVic’s greatest championship programs ever. Assistant coach Beecroft took over head coaching duties following the varsity season.

Previously, the Vikettes came close to a CIAU title earning a bronze in 1983 and silver in 1981. However, the difference this season seemed to come from Olympic trio of Charlton, Ballantyne and assistant coach Beecroft. Beecroft and Charlton went on to compete together in the 1984 Lose Angeles Summer Games, while Charlton and Ballantyne teamed up in 1988 for the Seoul Summer Games.
