Biography
The 1987 University of Victoria men’s soccer team finished off their Canada West league with an 8-1-1 record. The Vikings won seven of their first eight games, with only one tie. Goalkeeper Jon Bos was named Canada West all-star goalkeeper with three shutouts to open the season. His only loss came in the second to last regular season game. In total the Vikings tallied 30 goals and only eight against.
Highlights from the regular season include a double-header weekend where the Vikings sent Alberta and Saskatchewan packing as the UVic men walked away with two victories. In the second game against Alberta the Vikings came from behind to win 4-3. With only seven minutes left in the match, Brian Penk scored the game-winning goal.
In a do-or-die match the Vikings upset No. 1 ranked, two-time defending national champions University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, advancing UVic into the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) championship tournament held in Montrel, Quebec. The Vikings defeated the Birds 1-0 to clinch the Canada West conference title. The goal came from striker Doug Muirhead, who was coming off a season with the Canadian professional soccer team Vancouver 49ers, in the last five minutes of regular time play. This was the first time the Birds lost a game since 1984.
Vikings were ranked No. 1 as they prepared for nationals in Montreal; the Thunderbirds were ranked fourth. The UVic men successfully defeated their opponents in round-robin play berthing them a spot in the gold medal match against No. 2 ranked Wilfred Laurier of Waterloo, Ontario.
At half time UVic was up 1-0 thanks to Scott Sieben who put the Vikings ahead in the 20th minute. Sieben secured the goal off a rebound from the Laurier goalkeeper, initially fired from John Hughes.
Rick Jasken extended the lead to 2-0 after dribbling into the penalty box and allowing Muirhead to score in the 71st minute. Shortly after, Laurier narrowed the gap to 2-1. With little time left in the game Steve Cecchi replaced injured player Dallas Moen who suffered a fractured ankle. In the final minute of play, Cecchi nailed a third goal into the net to end the match at 3-1 in favour of the Vikings.
Although the Vikings won 3-1, head coach Twamley was quick to recognize that the final score did not reflect the intensity between the two teams.
Sieben was honoured as the 1987 CIAU most valuable player (MVP). Sieben was only the second recipient to accept this new award in the history of CIAU soccer.
