Biography
The University of Victoria women’s rowing team has dominated the country for the past four years, especially as heavyweight contenders. This year, not only did the reign the UVic women’s crew continue, but they became a force to be reckoned with as lightweight rowers as well.

The Vikes women’s rowing program established themselves as both heavyweight and lightweight contenders at the 2001-02 Canadian University Rowing Championships (CURC). In the heavyweight division, the women won gold in the pairs, for the fifth straight year and silver in the singles. They also successfully defended their varsity eights gold medal for the fifth consecutive year. In the lightweight division the women struck gold again in both the double and coxed four. A bronze medal was won in the women’s lightweight single.

Not only did the Vikes women’s rowing crew win their fifth consecutive CURC title, but they almost doubled their points on second place Brock University.

After the 2001-02 fall season, the Vikes hosted the 17th annual indoor national Monster Erg championship regatta in McKinnon gym. In the U23 lightweight division the Vikes swept the field with a first, second, third place finish by  Lysanne Lavigne (7:19.04), Lindsay Jennerich (7:23.09) and Kate Richards (7:25.00). Lavigne won the overall national U23 lightweight women’s title. At the senior B women’s event, Patricia Gill walked away with a second place finish, only 1.06 seconds behind the leader from UBC. Vikes Michelle Fritz, Lorena Campbell, Shannon Mallory, Laura Gray rounded off third place to sixth place.

The UVic women’s crew walked away with two more overall national titles. Renata Troc and Sheryl Preston finished 1/2 in the senior A lightweight division. Troc’s time of 7:17.09 berthed her to the national Sr. A lightweight title. Mimicking the Troc and Preston duo, Rachelle de Jong rowed away to a national title with a time of 6:55.06, 11 seconds ahead of her UVic teammate Emily Boyle who finished second (7:06.05).

At the final regatta of the season, the Vikes were determined to out-row the UBC Thunderbirds and defend their undefeated Brown Cup Challenge streak. The Brown Cup is an annual competition between the Vikes and Thunderbirds eight oared boats hosted between the Fraser River in Richmond, BC and the Gorge Waterways in Victoria. It's modeled off the historic Oxford/Cambridge boat race down the Thames River in England. The Vikes ended their season off on a high note with a victory over the Thunderbirds, earning their eighth Brown Cup title.
