Biography The University of Victoria men’s golf team travelled to Thornhill, ON for the 2006 Canadian University and College Golf Championships in support by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA). A combined 155 male and female golfers competed for team and individual titles, as well as an opportunity to represent Canada at the 2006 World University Games in Torino, Italy. Golfers who achieve a low score after 54 holes (three rounds) earned a berth to the 2006 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship.
Defending champions the UVic Vikes competed against 20 other teams from across the country in the men’s field. Head coach
Bryan Carbery’s roster including
Saare Adams, Jade Dennill, Shelby Dreher, Todd Halpen and
Ross MacPherson make up the five competing Vike athletes. The Vikes have previously captured two Canadian University and College titles (2003, 2005) in the past three years, and are looking for their third title at the Thornhill Country Club.
Previous Canadian golf championships have been organized and hosted by the RCGA. However, for the first time this year, the University of Toronto hosted the championships for a more traditional university/college tournament atmosphere.
After the opening round, at the championships, the Vikes trailed Humber College of Toronto, Ontario 290-292. University of Toronto Blues were third finishing the round at 295. After the first round of play, Vikes captain Halpen lead the individual ranks carding an early low of 69, while Adams was in a four-way tie for fifth place.
As defending champs, the Vikes were on their toes all week as Humber, University of Manitoba and University of British Columbia challenged them. Although they trailed Humber at the beginning of the tournament, the Vikes edged out Humber in the final round to defend the 2006 RCGA Canadian University/College championship title by two strokes. Combined, Adams, Halpen, Dreher, Dennill and MacPherson carded 1179. Humber placed second (1181) and Manitoba finished third (1190). Rounding out the top five was UBC (1192) and University of Waterloo (1207).
The UVic men’s golf team made history at the university/college championships as they earned their third title in four seasons. Dennill was the only registered golfer to nail a hole-in-one at the tournament. He aced the 192-year, par 3 fifth hole and carded a 72 on the Wednesday of the weeklong tournament.
Halpen finished second with just two strokes back of individual leader Jason Wellings of McMaster University. However, Halpen still qualified for the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship where he met Richard Scott of Kingsvilles, ON in the 36-hole final match. Halpen posted an impressive 3 & 1 semifinal victory over national amateur team player Graham DeLaet of Saskatchewan who was dominating the field before playing Halpen. Halpen’s victory into the Canadian Amateur finals berthed him into the 2006 Canadian Open, which took place in September of 2006 at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.
Four of the five competing Vike athletes graduated at the end of the 2006 season, leaving only Dennill to help Victoria defending their two-time championship status next season. “It’s so neat for, of the four of us, to go out [with] a bang,” says Vike captain Halpen. “It’s special for us and we’re so happy for our coach Bryan Carbery. He’s really pushed us the last four years and he’s a big reason why we’ve done so well.”
