Biography
The 1995 University of Victoria men’s cross country team claimed their second-straight national title in 1995 but it wasn't without some adversity as many member of the team were working through nagging injuries. Head coach Brent Fougner’s main focus for his team was to keep moving forward as one unit. "The whole team had been improving throughout each week of training, building confidence. They were so focused and determined on that day that nothing was going to stop them. Once again, a total team effort," says Fougner.

For the first time since the CIAU championships began in 1963, there was no qualifying meet required to advance to nationals. Prior to 1995, the Canada West Universities Athlete Association organized a meet for UVic, University of British Columbia (UBC), University of Calgary, University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge, University of Manitoba and the University of Saskatchewan, with the top teams advancing to the national championships. This year, the national championship was open to all eligible CIAU competing schools, opening the opportunity to all Canadian university runners.

The Vikes competed in two meets leading up to the CIAU championships, the Vikes Invitational at Beacon Hill Park and the B.C. Provincials hosted in Vancouver. For the second year in a row, University of Western Ontario hosted the CIAU national championship on the Thames Valley Golf Course. Although the Vikes were accustomed to the course, the open participation format completely changed the mentality of the race. As Fougner said, the Vikes would have to work as a team to be successful.

The Vikes performed extremely well at the championships with Graham Cocksedge (33:17) leading the team and finishing second overall. Jody Lee (33:22) followed closely behind, crossing the line just after Cocksedge for a third place finish.  Both Victoria runners finished behind UBC runner Jeff Schiebler (32:09). Neal Beattie (33:39) also earned points for UVic with a sixth-place finish. Combined the UVic men’s cross-country team scored 46 points on the reserve scoring system. UBC finished second with 53 points, University of Windsor in third with 111 points, University of Western Ontario in fourth with 118 points and the University of Manitoba rounded out the top five with 153 points.

Vikes head coach Fougner was named CIAU coach of the year for the second consecutive year.
