Biography
Two-time defending Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) women’s cross-country national champions, the University of Victoria Vikettes, launched into the 2000-01 season with a full plate. Last season, the 1999 women’s roster earned a low 32 points at nationals with top performances from two-time CIAU All-Canadian Stephanie Mills, Barbora Brych, Larissa Managh, Brandi Heisterman and Second Team All-Canadian Wendy Cocksedge. The 2000 roster welcomes back Cocksedge and Mills, who were eligible only for the first half of the season, from the 1999 championship team. Head coach Brent Fougner relied on Cocksedge and Lambrick Park Secondary School graduate Nancy Fedoruk to step up for the Vikes.

UVic began the season on home course with the Vikes Invitational at Beacon Hill Park, where the roster was traditionally selected. Ending their fall season, the Vikes competed in Toronto, Ontario for the CIAU national championships. UVic placed two runners in the top 10 and four in the top 25 in the 5-kilometer races. Mills was UVic’s top finisher in second place, while Cocksedge followed in sixth place. An 18th, 21st and 22nd finishes rounded off the Vikettes top five times.

As a team the Vikes scored 69 points easily defeating second place Guelph University by 20 points. University of Western Ontario rounded off the top-three team results.  At the end of the tournament, Fougner was named CIAU coach of the year for the third consecutive year. Mills and Cocksedge were named CIAU First Team All-Canadians.
