Brent Fougner (Head Coach)
Biography The 2001-02 University of Victoria women’s cross-country team had continued to dominate Canadian middle distance under the leadership of head coach
Brent Fougner. After the 2000-01 roster captured the programs third consecutive national title, the 2001-02 roster ran for gold. Winning the national championships, would tie the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), formally known as, Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) record for most consecutive national champions currently held by the University of Western Ontario.
The women lost 2000 Canada West most valuable player and three-time First Team All-Canadian Stephanie Mills. Fougner would look for leadership from 2000 First Team All-Canadian
Wendy Cocksedge, Larissa Managh and Liz Ramage. The Vikes also picked up two-time CIAU Second Team All-Canadian, law student,
Heather Goodfellow of Halifax, NS and first-rookie
Christina Heisterman. The Vikes began the season with their annual Vikes Invitation at Beacon Hill Park. Coach Fougner quickly realized the potential of his women’s cross-country team. “We have such a strong women’s team that the main focus this year will be to stay healthy,” says Fougner. Leading up to the CIS national championships, Heisterman was named Canada West rookie of the year.
Following the Canada West Championships, the Vikes travelled to Sherbrooke, Quebec for the CIS national Championships. Hosted by the Universite de Sherbrooke, 94 female runners lined up at the starting line for the opportunity to win the individual and team titles.
Crossing the line first for the Vikes was second-year Ramage at a time of 18:24 for a fourth place individual finish. Closely behind Ramage was Managh in fifth place at 18:27. Goodfellow finished 13
th in18:55,
Andrea DePol finished 15
th in 19:04, Cocksedge finished 17
th in 19:06, Heisterman finished 27
th in 19:23 and
Tiffany Evans finished 64
th in a time of 20:31. The top five UVic finishes berthed the Vikes to their fourth consecutive national cross-country title. University of Toronto placed second and McGill University in third.
Leading the Vikes, Ramage and Managh were named CIS First Team All-Canadians. Goodfellow was named to the second all-Canadian team. Not only did coach Fougner earn his fourth consecutive CIS coach of the year honour, he also guided the women’s varsity cross-country team to a CIS record of four consecutive national titles. Victoria and University of Western Ontario are the only schools to achieve this status. Fougner is also tied coach Bob Vigars of Western Ontario for most CIS coach of the year awards.
