Biography
The University of Victoria men’s soccer team’s dream season began with eleven veteran players, a new international experienced recruit and a change in the leagues points system. Head Coach Bruce Wilson entered his eighth year as head coach of the men’s soccer team. With every athlete returning, accept Rick Fast, Wilson foresaw a positive season. “We’re looking forward to a strong season, with a little bit of luck, we will be a contender,” says Wilson.

Last season, the men missed play-offs, placing fourth in the Canada West conference with a regular season record of 4-2-4. The 1996 varsity season saw changed in the points system rewarding three points for a win, forcing the Vikes to not give up so many points through ties.

The Vikes welcome Daniel Imhof of Smithers, BC to the 1996 line-up. Imhof had just finished a six-month experience training with National League St. Gallen of Switzerland. Wilson looked for leadership from returning Vike and Canada West all-star J.J Atterbury and Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) First Team All-Canadian Maurizio Conforti. Up front, the Vikes rely on Ian Carroll, Simon Vickers and Brent Garraway to convert goals. Anchoring the back-line is goalkeeper Dominic Butcher and Geordie Lyall.

The road to the CIAU national championships began at the Canada West championship tournament where UVic’s 3-0 victory was a huge upset over University of British Columbia. The Vikes finished second of six teams in the Canada West conference with a regular season record of 6-3-1.

Conforti, Vickers and Atterbury were named 1996 Canada West All-Stars, repeating their performance from the 1995 season. Coach Wilson was named Canada West coach of the year. Vickers led the conference in most goals. At 19 goals he converted 16.9 percent of all the leagues goals and was 12 goals ahead of the second place athlete who converted seven goals. Steph Steiner led the Vikes with most assists and was second in the conference.

York University of Toronto, Ontario hosted the 26th annual men’s CIAU national championships. The tournament began with a 2-2 draw between the Vikes and McGill University.  Butcher secured a shoot-out victory over the University of Toronto in game two. Advancing to the gold medal game, the Vikes were pitted against University of Western Ontario. Steiner converted the lone goal in the a 1-0 victory over Western from a breakaway pass by Imhof. The UVic Vikes flew back to Victoria as 1996 national champions.

Conforti was named CIAU First Team All-Canadian and CIAU most valuable player (MVP), while Atterbury was named Second Team All-Canadian. Wilson was named CIAU coach of the year and Conforti, Atterbury, Lyall and Vickers were named to the Tournament XI team.
