Biography
The 1995 University of Victoria women’s field hockey program had turned into one of the strongest field hockey programs in the nation. UVic sat just behind University of Toronto for the most Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) championship.

In addition to the unlimited substitution rule of 1992, the 1995 season will also adopt the elimination of off-sides. From now on, there will be no off-side penalties in field hockey, allowing a “cherry picker” to float behind the opposing defensive line.

Head coach Lynne Beecroft and fifth-year Brenda Lannard led the UVic field hockey team through the 1995 season. UVic hosted the Canada West conference championship tournament under cold and gloomy weather. In game one Lannard secured the 1-0 victory over University of Calgary with the lone goal. Her scoring continued as Lannard and Tessa Campbell each scored in the second game against University of Alberta. Campbell earned a second goal for a 3-0 victory of Alberta. Game three pitted UVic against University of Manitoba. UVic easily won handing Manitoba a 6-0 loss. Diana Taylor and Aoibhinn Grimes each scored two goals a piece, while Campbell and Lannard each scored one. In front of a full crowd, the final game saw UVic play against University of British Columbia (UBC). UVic struggled all season beating UBC and this game was no different. The two west coast teams tied 0-0. The tie left UVic in second place as they headed into the national tournament.

Travelling east to Toronto, UVic aimed to win their second consecutive championship banner. The Vikettes played host team York University in game one. Four goals by Taylor, one from Lannard and one from Margaret Fonger earned UVic a 6-2 victory over York. A lone goal from scoring machine Lannard secured a tie against University of Toronto in game two. Advancing to the semifinals, the Vikettes played University of New Brunswick for the chance to play in the gold medal game. Proving they deserved the spot, UVic defeated New Brunswick 6-0 with goals from Taylor, Aoibhinn Grimes, Julia Wong, Justine Allen and Sandra Ulmer. As assumed, UVic met UBC in the finals. Allen scored the only goal of the game berthing the Vikettes to their second consecutive championship title and seventh in program history. The goal earned Allen player of the game and Canada West female athlete of the week.

Beecroft’s team dynamic motto turned second place Canada West finalists into CIAU national champions. “…the kids stepped up and it paid off,” said Beecroft.
