Biography
It has been four season since the University of Victoria women’s basketball team has won a Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) title. With a young roster, Kathy Shields entered her 14th season as UVic women’s head coach and welcomed back Canada West All-Stars Jenny Sutton and Tara Gallaway. Unfortunately, Shields lost two key all-stars Kelly Boucher and Shannon Conway.

After being outscored by one point (288-287) by the University of Calgary Dinos in the 1990-91 Canada West season, Shields and her roster of 13 athletes looked for redemption. The two schools tied in 1990-91 with a record of 17-3, but were later determined by points, placing UVic in second behind Calgary.

The Vikettes hosted the 1991-92 Final Four Canada West conference championship tournament. The winner would earn the Canada West title and a berth to the CIAU national championship tournament. With only one round-robin game, the Vikettes had to defeat Calgary. Overpowering the Dinos, UVic won 84-40. Mimicking last years Canada West championship game, the Vikettes came face-to-face with the University of Lethbridge, however this time, UVic defeated Lethbridge by 40 points to win the Canada West championship banner.

Sutton and Gallaway were named Canada West First Team All-Stars. Fourth-year Heather Bohez, was named to the second all-star team. First-year Kirstine Brown was dubbed one of five Canada West all-star rookies, while head coach Shields was honoured as Canada West coach of the year.

UVic’s regular season game high was an outstanding 107-58 against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on February 8, 1992. Together, the Vikettes out-rebounded all Canada West opponents with 736 rebounds.

The UVic women’s basketball team travelled across the country to the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) for the 1991-92 CIAU national tournament. With an undefeated regular season record of 20-0 UVic was the team to beat. Game one pitted UVic against hometown favorites, UPEI. With the crowd behind UPEI the Vikettes fell behind. Taking control in the second half of the game, Victoria won 69-30 silencing the home crowd. Sutton was UVic’s leading scorer with 14 points, followed by Bohez with 12 points. In game two UVic played University of Toronto. In one of the best games of the season, the Vikettes won 73-55. Sutton lead the team once again with 18 points, Gallaway with 13 points and Bohez with 10 points. Advancing to the championship game, the Vikettes met No. 2 ranked University of Winnipeg. Winnipeg came out strong forcing UVic to play catch up. By half time, UVic was leading by one point 32-31. Finding their rhythm, the Victoria women defeated Winnipeg 64-51.  Kathy Keats led the Vikettes with 16 points, followed by Sutton with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Audrey Dennison with 11 points.

At the end of an undefeated season (20-0), Sutton was dubbed CIAU most valuable player (MVP) and CIAU tournament All-Star, along with Keats.bSutton and Gallaway led the team in points with a combined total of 532. Gallaway led the team in assists with a total of 68, while Bohez led the team in rebounds totaling 93 defensive and 71 offensive rebounds. Bohez also racked up points with an 83.3 percent free throw average. For the second time, coach Shields was presented the Peter Ennis Award for CIAU coach of the year.

“Everything was perfect both on the court and off,” said Sutton. “I’ve waited for this for fives years.” Sutton went on to call the team, “a unit with a whole lot of heart.”
