1998 University of Victoria Women’s Cross Country
“What is it to be a runner? What drive us to endure, to push past pain
In a sport most hate, what makes us sustain? We get little glory, we don’t fill the stands
Yet to run is the thing we best understand”
- Part of a poem written by the1997-87 women’s cross-country team

Brent Fougner (Head Coach)
BiographyIt’s been four years since the University of Victoria women’s cross country team tasted victory. Four time men’s Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) coach of the year
Brent Fougner took on head coach duties and guided the women’s team to their sixth national championship during the 1998 season.
As the team travelled to Waterloo, Ontario for the national championship meet, the Vikes were ranked third behind the University of Western Ontario and Guelph University.
The Vikes were led by first team all-Canadian
Barbora Brych who captured a bronze medal at nationals. After fracturing her ankle the previous season, the bronze medal victory was extremely rewarding for Brych as she led the team to an overall CIAU win.
Stephanie Mills’ fifth place finish also was named First Team All-Canadian.
Larissa Managh who finished 14
th was named Second Team All-Canadian.
For the fifth consecutive year, head coach Fougner was named coach of the year. The four previous honours were presented to Fougner as the Vikes men’s cross-country head coach.
The same weekend the cross-country team won nationals, the men's rugby team won their second consecutive championship title. The men's rugby and women's cross-country victories gave the University of Victoria's athletics’program's 34th and 35th national title in its 34th year as a Canadian Interuniversity school.
