Biography The University of Victoria women’s rowing team geared up for a very important 1997-1998 varsity season as they hosted the first ever Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC). Working through the summer, the Vikes varsity women’s rowing team entered CURCs recharged and ready to row.
The Vikes women’s rowing team took home three gold medals during the inaugural CURCs hosted at Elk Lake, Victoria, BC. World silver medalist
Kristen Wall and
Buffy Alexander led the women’s eight to victory. At a time of 6:17.0 the Vikes eights beat out the University of British Columbia (6:26.0) and Queens University (6:26.8). Wall also won the women’s singles with a standout time of 7:55.2. Her closest competitor was Western rower Erin Crawford at 8:17.1. Together, Alexander and
Nancy Sheils finished second in the women’s double. University of Western Ontario came second followed by the University of Alberta.
At the seventh annual Brown Cup Challenge the Vikes were determined to win their fifth consecutive title. The Brown Cup is an annual regatta between UVic and mainland rivals the University of British Columbia (UBC). The race is modeled after the historic Oxford – Cambridge boat race that sees two eight-oared shells compete over the winding Thames River in London, England.
For the fifth straight year in a row, the University of Victoria women’s eight rowing team beat the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in the grueling Brown Cup Challenge. The crew consisted of,
Jen Heard, Senta Kaiser, Erin Sloan, Karen Clark, Carolyn Rudden, Veronica Soron, Wall, Sheils and Alexander.
At the end of the year, child and youth care student-athlete
Angela Paletta-Haslam was honoured as the UVic Presidents Cup recipient. The Presidents Cup represents an outstanding student-athlete in fourth or fifth year, who best combines scholastic achievement and athletic ability. Palette-Haslam maintained a 6.89 GPA while participating in the Canada Summer Games, the Western Canada Games and varsity victories in the U.S and in Canada.
