Biography
After losing their first Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC) in seven years, last season in 2004, the University of Victoria women’s rowing team only had one goal for 2005, to win CURCs.

Head coach Rick Crawley lost two key rowers from last years varsity team, but returning rowers, Lindsay Jennerich, Gwen McLennan, Sarah Bonikowsky, Faraley VanderSchilden and cox Vikki Agate provided Crawley with key experience and leadership. Joining the Vikes were rookies Meghan Thomas and Sue Ross. The Vikes also called up Evan Wilson, Ally Kryszkiewicsz, Hilary Whetung-Cole and Leah Stone from the development team.

The Vikes used home course advantage as they hosted the 2005 national championships at Elk Lake. Success for the Vikes began in the women’s coxed eight with a second place finish at a time of 6:27.95. They captured another silver medal in the women’s coxless pair in 7:59.87 seconds. The Vikes dominated the lightweight category capturing two gold medals. The first came in the lightweight doubles at a time of 7:33.46, followed by another gold in the lightweight coxless four in 7:01.49 seconds. The Vikes respectively finished fifth in the single scull at 8:35.53 and sixth in the lightweight single scull at 8:19.42. The two gold medals and two silver medals berthed the women’s UVic rowing team to their eighth rowing national championship.

At the Monster Erg indoor rowing championships, held in McKinnon gym at the University of Victoria, the UVic women did not disappoint. McLennan and Jaime Traynor captured the gold and silver honours in the senior B lightweight category. McLennan clocked in at 7:33.6, followed by Traynor at 7:36.8. In the senior B heavyweight category the Vikes swept the event claiming first through fifth, a seventh and ninth place finishes. Heather Vander Geest led the way, finishing at 7:19.3, Leah Volker placed second at 7:22.1, followed by Kryszkiewicz only 1.3 seconds behind at 7:23.4. Stone (7:25.3) and Suzanne Brooks (7:28.3) finished fourth and fifth, Whetung-Cole (7:29.7) who placed seventh and Wilson (7:39.4) who rounded out the top 10 in ninth place. Vike alumni Sheryl Preston place second in the senior A lightweight category clocking in at 7:17.4.
