Biography
2002 was another successful year for the Vikes field hockey team. Under the guidance of head coach Lynne Beecroft the Vikes regular season record was 11-1. The only loss of the season came at the end of the Canada West Championship tournament hosted by University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, who beat the Vikes in the finals. Prior to that, the Vikes defeated the University of Manitoba 4-0, the University of Alberta 2-0 and the University of Calgary 1-0

National team member Lauren MacLean and Sara Simpson were named Canada West All-Stars. With four goals a piece, Haley Wickman and Elise Roberts, both National team members, made the top ten Canada West goal scorer chart. However, MacLean stole the show leading the conference with 15 goals. MacLean’s 15 goals counted for 45.45% of all Vike goals scored this past season.

The Vikes went on to capture every Canada West award presented in 2002. Robyn Evans received rookie of the year, MacLean was dubbed player of the year (Liz Hoffman Award), as well as the Gail Wilson award. Finally, coach Beecroft was named Canada West coach of the year.

Travelling east to Halifax for the CIS (formally CIAU) National Championship tournament, the Vikes sat it prime contention for yet another McRae Cup. After a 0-0 draw in their opening match against the University of Toronto Blues, the Vikes dominated host team Saint Mary’s Huskies 7-0. Stealing the show, the Vikes continued their shutout streak by defeating the University of Waterloo 4-0 in the semifinals. In the gold medal game the Vikes played the Thunderbirds. Ohio State University transfer and goalkeeper Gillian Batey’s 2-0 shutout birthed the Vikes into their 10th McRae Cup, the most Championship titles than any other CIS field hockey team.

MacLean was named CIS player of the year with the most goals scored and the Gail Wilson award for most
