Biography Three years ago in 1984, the University of Victoria women’s field hockey team won their program’s first Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union (CIAU) Championship title. Eager for another title, the 1987 Vikettes replied on core players,
Katrina Lineen and key recruit
Rochelle Low to lead the team.
During the 1987 regular season, the Vikettes travelled to Winnipeg with a record of 6-0-2 for their last regular season tournament, requiring only a tie to secure their first place finish. University of British Columbia Thunderettes and the Vikettes tied 1-1. Lineen scored the only goal for the Vikettes, which was just enough for the Canada West Championship title.
Following the 8-0-4 regular season record,
Carmen Kirkness, Lauralee Kopec, Low and Lineen were named Canada West all-stars.
The CIAU national championship brought the Vikettes to York University in Toronto Ontario where they battled against York University Yoewomen and the University of Calgary Dinos in round-robin play. The Vikettes fell to the Dinos in game one 0-1, but fought back with a commanding 5-2 win over the Yoewomen. The UVic women played mainland rivals the Thunderettes in the semifinals defeating them 1-0 advancing them to the gold medal game against the University of Toronto Blues. In a hard fought game, the Vikettes won 1-0 to overtake two-time defending CIAU champions, Toronto Blues for their second CIAU national championship banner. Vikette rookie Low scored the winning goal off a short corner rebound, eight minutes into the second half.
First-year Low was awarded rookie of the year and Lineen was honoured at CIAU First Team All-Canadian, along with teammate Kirkness. Lineen, Low and
Moria Hill were named tournament All-Stars. Fifth-year Hill was also named player of the gold medal game.
After three consecutive years placing third at CIAU’s the UVic Vikettes were finally back on top.
