Biography
The University of Victoria women’s field hockey team had a very memorable season in 2000 as Anna Grimes’ guided the team to many victories and awards in her last year as a Vike.

The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and the Vikes went head-to-head throughout the regular season in pursuit of capturing the Canada West title. With one goal differentiating the two teams, the Vikes managed to pull ahead to capture the Canada West conference banner. Both teams had a record of 8-2-2, but Vikes goaltender Janet Filipenko only allowed seven goals, while the Thunderbirds had eight goals against them.

Grimes, senior national player Andrea Rushton and veterans Meggan Hunt and Kristal Timmer were all named Canada West All-Stars.

For the third time, the Vikes would host the CIAU national championships. Their goal was simple, to win their first Canadian Interuniveristy Athletic Union (CIAU) title on home turf. In the final games of the 1979 and 1996 CIAU championships, the Vikes unfortunately lost at home to the University of Toronto Blues both years.

Although the Vikes were rookie laden, eight players were members of the junior or senior national program providing the Vikes with competitive playing experience. Jacquie Hornby, Kate Lindsay and Elise Roberts played for the Jr. national program, while Anna Grimes, Hunt, Rushton, Timmer, Lauren MacLean and Sara Simpson played for the Sr. national team.

The Vikes competed with the Thunderbirds and the University of Saint Mary’s Huskies in round-robin play at the CIAUs. In an opening match against mainland rivals, the Thunderbirds and Vikes tied 0-0. In game two, the Vikes shatter the Huskies 13-0 berthing them to the semifinals. In the semifinals, the Vikes played the University of Alberta Pandas and defeated them 5-2 advancing them into the finals to face-off with CIAU rivals the Varsity Blues.

Determined to change a historical pattern of falling second to the Blues, the Vikes drew first blood. The final

score was 3-0 over the Blues to berth the Vikes to
their first CIAU national championship title on home turf. This would also mark the programs ninth McRae Cup.

What made the win even better was the crowd that came out to support the Vikes throughout the entire season. “UVic always had the best crowds,” recalls Vike all-Canadian Rushton.

Grimes was the lone Vike named CIAU First Team All-Canadian and was also awarded CIAU Tournament MVP. Hunt, Rushton and Timmer were named CIAU Second Team All-Canadian. At the end of the season, Grimes’ was the recipient of the University of Victoria’s President’s Cup, awarded to an outstanding student-athlete who best combines scholastic achievement and athletic skill in their fourth or fifth year. This marked the seventh time a female field hockey player won the President’s Cup.
