Biography
The rivalry between the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia men’s rugby teams live on as they enter the second Canadian Interuniversity season. After showing UBC who controls BC rugby in the inaugural 1997-98 championship finals, the Vikes aim to convert another victory.

The Vikes began the season off on the right foot defeating the University of British Columbia 39-3 in the first of the two-game “Boot” competition series. The annual boot game between UVic and the UBC began in 1968.  During that era, members of the UBC rugby team stole their coach Brian Wightman’s boots (cleats). Wightman, a former rugby player from England came over to UBC from 1964-67 where he took up coaching duties. After bronzing his boots, the team retuned one to Wightman and kept the other placing it on a trophy where is still stands today.

In the second game of the series, the Vikes defeated UBC 40-22 to give them, what is, the largest two game total margin of victory over UBC. The Vikes won the first Boot in 1982 and have dominated the series ever since. Using this win the UVic rugby team headed into the second annual Canadian University Rugby Championship.

Hosted by the Vikes at Centennial Stadium, UBC, UVic, University of Alberta (UofA) Bears and Trinity Western
1998 MRUG Tim van Vielt
University (TRU) Spartans of Langley BC competed for the championship title. The first game of the tournament posted the Vikes against UofA. Taking control, the Vikes defeated the Bears 36-7. UVic then played TRU; a win against TRU would berth the Vikes into the finals to play UBC. Wasting no time, Vike Tim van Vielt scored two early tries and successfully converted both. Dominating the Spartans, UVic scored 47 more unanswered points. The final score of the game was 81-0, the largest margin of victory thus far.

After a full weekend of horrible weather and intense playing, Vikes head coach Doug Tate made the decision to move the gold medal game to Wallace field. Although the move provided a better playing surface, Wallace field is wider then Centennial Stadium. This could have potentially posed as a defending risk for the Vikes. Nonetheless, the two BC rivals went head-to-head in the championship game.

In the first half, UVic scored two tries and converted both. As UBC ran out of steam, UVic winger Harold William
1998 MRUG Harold Williams
s racked up three more tries, one of which was came from Williams using the wider Wallace field to his
advantage. Van Vielt earned another try in the second half as well. The final score of the game was 37-13 in favour of the home team.

Proving that they were the best in the country, the Vikes men’s rugby team won the Canadian university rugby championships on home turf for the second straight year.
