Biography
Last season, 1997-98 the University of Victoria men’s rowing team won the inaugural Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC) title. During the 1998-99 season, the men aimed to repeat their victory on home waters at Elk Lake.
Just before the varsity season kicked off in September, many members of the Vikes rowing team participated in the National identification camp and were selected to the team development pool. They then competed for Team BC at the Canada Cup and won the event for the first time.
After competing in the Head of the Charles in Boston and smaller regattas in Victoria, the Vikes men’s varsity team were ready to host and defend their CURC title. At the championships, the men’s eight defended their gold medal victory by a margin of seven seconds over their competitors. Men’s eight members, Kevin Light and Joe Stankevicous partnered to win the men’s heavyweight double. At the final 250-metres Light and Stankevicous’ were a full boat-and–a–half length ahead of their nearest competitors. Chris Davidson took home UVic’s third gold medal in the lightweight singles with a time of 7:31.7, 10 seconds ahead of the second place boat. In the lightweight doubles event, Davidson and Adam McFarlane defeated the University of Westen Ontario by less than a second, earning UVic's fourth gold medal of the regatta.
Following the fall season, the Vikes rowing team moved indoor to compete and host the Monster Erg. In 1998 the Monster Erg officially became the identification and assessment meet for the provincial team.
Barney Williams, Stankevicous, Grace and Light rowed to victory with a leading time of 6:06.7 posted by Williams. Their average time was 6:12.5. Grace continued the Vikes success with a victory in the men’s senior B event.
At the end of the season,
Mike Grace was presented with the Martlet Athletic Award given annually to a student who has made an outstanding contribution to the Vikes athletic program. Davidson was dubbed 1998 Sport BC Male Rower of the Year. Grace and McFarlane were named to the 1998 Rowing BC Canada Cup team.
Head coach
Howard Campbell notes the success of this 1998-99 team to the depth and determination of the team, “the crew has never been stronger than it is now and the depth has become even deeper".
