Biography
The University of Victoria men’s rowing program has produced outstanding athletes, many of whom have represented Canada at the olympic games. Head coach Howard Campbell is excited to watch alumni Chris Davidson, Gavin Hassett and Derek Porter wear the maple leaf at the 2000 Sydney, Australia Olympic game.

This year, the 2000-01 rowing squad welcomes back co-captain James Keogh and Jon Mandick, both who were 1999-2000 Academic All-Canadians, varsity coxswain Pat McFarlane, Tyler Goodale, Adam Greene (co-captain), Mike Lewis and Dave Poilievre. Athletes to watch for this season are up and coming Adam Kreek, Mike Tomlinson, James Dunaway and Cam MacCarthy. The Vikes also welcome 14 new rowers to the roster. After successfully defending their Brown Cup record, against the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds, the Vikes head into the season with a competitive men's crew.

The University of Victoria hosted the fourth annual Canadian university rowing championship (CURC) regatta at Elk Lake in Victoria, BC. The Vikes aimed to win their third CURC and reclaim their victory from 1997 and 1998 seasons.

With five of the eight rowers returning to the varsity eight’s squad, Keogh, Mandick, Goodale, Poilivere, Greene and coxswain McFarlane, all eyes were on the men's eight event. After the first 500-metres, the Vikes who sat in third place were forced to play catch up. Staying in contention over the majority of the race, the Vikes turned on the jets for the last 500-metres gaining the lead to take the title by the closest margin of the regatta. In the last strides, the Vikes (5:49.1) defeated UBC (5:50.6) and the University of Western Ontario (5:51.7).

Transfer rower from Trent University Dave Kay finished with a two second lead over UBC, winning the men’s single heavyweight sculls event. In the lightweight division, second year single scull rower Lewis finished a respective second place. Lewis and Mandick teamed up to take on the lightweight doubles event. Together they defeated the opposition to take home the gold. Kevin Light and Kiran van Rijn continued the Vikes domination and won gold in the men’s pair event.

Combined, the Vikes earned 78 points reclaiming the national championship title. UBC came second with 51 points, followed by the Brock University of St. Catharines Ontario with 43 points.

At the annual Monster Erg indoor national championship held in McKinnon gym at UVic, the Vikes proved their strength. Kreek (6:04.6) and Light (6:08.2) took first and second place in the senior B men’s division, while Mandick (6:20.1) and Lewis (6:31.2) finished first and third in the senior B lightweight western division. Vike rower Matt Swick powered through right till the end to finish one second behind Canadian Olympic rower Andrew Hoskins (5:58.3) in the senior men’s A event. Swick placed third (5:59.3) overall. Vike alumni Gavin Hassett (6:19.4), who competed for Rowing Canada, placed third in the senior A lightweight division.

Finally, the Vikes competed in the annual Brown Cup Challenge, the rival race between UBC and UVic. The Brown Cup is modeled after the historic Oxford/Cambridge race, where two eight oared boats race over the Thames River. The Brown Cup began in 1993 and alternates locations between the Fraser River in Richmond, BC and the Gorge Waterway in Victoria. The Vikes left it all out on the river as they took home another Brown Cup victory.

At the end of the 2000-01 season, Kevin Light and Jon Mandick were recognized as outstanding athletes by the University of Victoria. Light was honoured as UVic's male athlete of the year. After the varsity season, Light represented Canada at the World Championships as a stroker for the national team men's eight boat. He also won a silver medal in the open men's pair at the U23 World Championship that same summer. Mandick was the recipient of UVic's President's Cup, which is awarded to a student-athlete who best combines athletic ability and academic achievement.
