Biography The University of Victoria women’s rowing team has dominated the country for three consecutive years. Proving they are the best crew, they have won the prestigious women’s eight all three years. The Vikes return to Elk Lake for the 2000-01 Canadian university rowing championship (CURC) this year.
This season the Vikes women’s rowing team will be without team leader
Buffy Williams as she prepared for the Olympics, alongside Vike alumni
Kristen Wall. Instead, head coach
Rick Crawley will rely on fifth year rowers
Karen Clark, Christa Heard, Jen Heard and coxswain
Carolyn Rudden. After a dominating 1999-2000 season Crawley will also expect leadership from fourth year
Rachelle de Jong and
Alia Zawacki. The women’s team also welcomes three transfer rowers,
Jacqui Cook (Brock University),
Emily Boyle (University of Ottawa) and
Jennifer Mickelson (University of Toronto) to the squad. Finally, Crawley has high hopes for
Kate Richards, Patricia Gill, Faraley Vander Schilden and
Lindsay Jennerich who are all junior national team recruits.
At the annual Canadian university rowing championship, UVic had heavy shoes to defend as they were three-time defending CURC champions. However, the women answered with big results.
Racing against 12 other universities in rainy and cold weather, UVic’s
Renata Troc took home the gold in women’s lightweight single. Team captain Jen Heard and cox Rudden guided the Vikes eight to a gold medal in six minutes 12.5 seconds. After the first 500-meters the Vikes boat pulled away from the group to win by 14 seconds over the University of British Columbia (UBC).
The UVic women’s crew earned an aggregate point-total of 78 to take their fourth consecutive national championship title. UBC came second with 62 points, followed by Trent University of Peterborough Ontario with 31 points.
At the Monster Erg indoor national championship held in McKinnon gym at UVic, the Vikes swept the senior B lightweight western division. Former junior national & UVic rower Jennerich won the senior B lightweight women’s event in seven minutes 38.4 seconds, followed by Vikes
Rebecca Chrisholm and
Amy Herlineaux. The UVic women also dominated the senior B women’s category as Reardon (7:17.5),
Darcy Marquardt (7:21.2),
Shannon Mallory (7:22.0)
, Robyn Willow (7:22.8) and Gill (7:25.0) rounded out the top five.
Romina Stefancic (6:46.4) and de Jong (6:59.0) also earned recognition placing first and third in the women’s senior A event.
