WHAT TO EXPECT:

Activities You May Participate In
Throughout the program, participants may take part in:

  • Land-based rowing technique instruction
  • Ergometer (rowing machine) training
  • On-water rowing instruction
  • General fitness and conditioning activities
  • Swim test
  • Ergometer fitness tests to help assess fitness and monitor progress

Erg tests are maximal-effort fitness assessment that requires participants to row up to 2,000 metres as fast as possible on a rowing machine. Participants will receive instruction on proper technique and pacing before completing the test.

Potential Risks
As with any physical activity, rowing and fitness testing involve some inherent risks, including:

  • Muscle soreness and fatigue
  • Strains, sprains, or overuse injuries
  • Blisters from rowing or ergometer use
  • Dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, or lightheadedness during intense exercise
  • Falls or slips around rowing equipment, docks, or boats
  • Risks associated with rowing on the water, including changing weather conditions and accidental immersion

While these risks are uncommon, participants should be aware of them and exercise within their abilities.

Please Speak Up if You Are Feeling Unwell
Your safety is our top priority.

Tell a coach immediately if you are feeling unwell before, during, or after any activity. "Feeling unwell" may include:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Dizziness or feeling faint
  • Unusual shortness of breath
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache or blurred vision
  • Sharp or worsening pain
  • Symptoms of illness such as fever, chills, or flu-like symptoms
  • Any medical concern that makes you unsure about continuing

There is no penalty for stopping an activity if you are not feeling well. We would much rather have a conversation and ensure your safety than have you push through a potential medical issue.
