Kevin Laidman

On Aug. 30, the UVic VIkes announced that former Vike and team Canada member Kevin Laidman would take over the reigns as head coach of the men's field hockey program beginning September 2013.

Laidman replaced Michael Lee, who led the Vikes for the past five seasons. Lee was a stand out international with over 100 caps for Canada since 2001 and led several Vikes to the start of their international career including James Kirkpatrick, Derrick Norton, Matthew Sarmento, Sam Jones and Laidman.

Having worked under Lee as an assistant coach in 2012-13, Laidman will ensure continuity in the men's field hockey program. A local product from Claremont High School, Laidman has played field hockey since a young age, competing at multiple national championships with Team BC and playing at the elite level with the Victoria Selects. The 27-year-old earned his first international cap with the men's senior national team in 2011 against France and also scored his first goal for Canada in the same match.

"I am very pleased to welcome Kevin to our coaching staff.  It is always great to see leaders emerge from within our own program," said Clint Hamilton, director of Vikes Athletics and Recreation. "A special thanks to Michael Lee who has been a dedicated head coach for our men's field hockey program. Having played for and coached with Michael, I am confident that Kevin will have a smooth transition into his new role and ensure that the high standards of our men's field hockey program are maintained."

Laidman competed for the Vikes for five seasons from 2006-10 and recently completed his degree in Physical Education and English. Now a competitive triathlete, Laidman hopes to bring his education, international experience and aspirations to inspire students to lead healthy, active lifestyles to full flavor as head coach of the Vikes men's field hockey program.
