Parker posts league-best fifth shutout against T-Birds

VANCOUVER - UVic Vikes women's soccer goalie Stephanie Parker posted her fifth shutout of the season on Friday night as the reigning Canada West champs drew 0-0 with the UBC Thunderbirds.

The tie drops the no. 4 Vikes out of top spot in the conference, which they only gained after Friday night's win over no. 1 Trinity Western Spartans. The Spartans regained first place and hold a one-point advantage in the race to host the post-season tournament.

The Vikes were outshot 19-7 by the Thunderbirds but their defence weathered the storm as Parker posted three saves.

Her UBC counterpart, Jaclyn Dunnett, also made three saves in the contest to earn the clean sheet.

The Vikes had the two best chances of the first 45 minutes as UVic striker Frankee Bencher was twice sent in all alone but both times Dunnett was equal to the task.

In the 20th minute, Bencher took advantage of a miscue at the T-Bird back-line to earn a clean break away, however, her point blank strike was saved by Dunnett.

Twenty minutes later Bencher fired a shot over the net after Kendra Flock sprang her on a Vikes counter attack.

The Vikes now head back to Centennial Stadium to host the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday, October 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 12pm.
