Thunderbirds ‘Dunnett’ again

VICTORIA – UBC Thunderbirds' goal keeper Jaclyn Dunnett held the UVic Vikes women's soccer team scoreless for the second time this season, picking up the shutout in a 1-0 win at Centennial Stadium.

The T-Birds hit the woodwork three times but it was Natalie Hirayama who was able to break the deadlock in the 39th minute, effectively ending any chance of the Vikes hosting in the postseason.

Two minutes later Vikes' midfielder #Natasha Walbaum# was brought down in the box and #Kendra Flock# stepped up to the spot to draw the score level. But Dunnett's diving save denied Canada West's top scorer and kept the T-Birds in the lead.

“UBC are one of our biggest rivals so it's always a close game,” Vikes head coach #Tracy David# said after the match. “Dunnett has been part of the national program for quite some time and she stepped up big on that penalty. But apart from that we just didn't test her enough today.”

The Vikes came close early in the second half as Flock's free kick caused a skirmish in the T-Birds' box with Walbaum eventually shooting just wide.

UVic 'keeper #Stephanie Parker# and Dunnett each made six saves but the T-Birds outshot the Vikes 25-10 by the final whistle.

The Vikes head into Sunday's match against the no. 1 Trinity Western Spartans with an 8-2-3 record. Their final '09 home game is set for a 12pm kickoff at Centennial Stadium.
