VICTORIA - At Thursday's fifth annual Vikes Honour Roll Luncheon, a record 60 UVic Vikes student-athletes were recognized for their academic achievement and status as Academic All-Canadians.
Vikes student-athletes, representing nine UVic academic faculties, were recognized for their academic achievement in the 2008-09 season. Vikes Honour Roll status is bestowed upon student-athletes who achieved a grade-point average of 6.6 in the previous academic year.
"While we celebrate athletic success in the field of competition, today is a great opportunity to acknowledge the success of our athletes in the classroom," said UVic director of Athletics and Recreation Clint Hamilton. "We have a record number of Honour Roll recipients this year, and let that be a testament to the continued growth and success of the Vikes program both on and off the court."
Amongst the Vikes Honour Roll recipients, the returning student with the highest academic average is also presented the Provost Award for Excellence. This year's recipient is Remy Mock, a second year member of the swim team and Science major. The Victoria native had a GPA of 8.88 during his first year of university studies in 2008-09.
In addition to the Vikes record number of Honour Roll recipients, academic success also resonated at the national level as women's basketball player Kayla Dykstra received the CIS Top Eight Academic all-Canadian award in early November. Dykstra, UVic's first-ever recipient of the award, was one of eight CIS athletes selected amongst the country's 2,256 CIS Academic all-Canadians.
In the instance of CIS sports, Vikes Honour Roll recipients were also presented CIS Academic All-Canadian certificates.
