Flock-less Vikes denied nationals berth

LANGLEY – Without the services of Canada West MVP #Kendra Flock#, the no. 4 UVic Vikes women's soccer team suffered a season-ending 1-0 loss to the UBC Thunderbirds in the conference semi-final.

Without Flock providing the firepower up front the Vikes struggled offensively and were blanked by Canada West First Team All-Star 'keeper Jaclyn Dunnett. Flock departed on Tuesday for a training camp with the Canadian senior national team.

The loss snaps a streak of four straight appearances in the CIS Championship that dated back to the Vikes' gold medal victory in 2005. Only two berths in this year's championship were available to the Canada West.

Thunderbird's lead-scorer Janine Frazao scored the game-winner just two minutes in when her shot deflected off the cross bar to beat Vikes' Canada West All-Star 'keeper #Stephanie Parker#.

The Thunderbirds went on to double the Vikes scoring opportunities outshooting the reigning Canada West champs 14-7. Parker made five saves and Dunnett made four to post her league-high ninth shutout.

The Vikes will still play for the Canada West bronze medal in Saturday's consolation match scheduled for a 3 p.m. kickoff in Langley. It wasn't the ending to the season the Vikes had envisioned after concluding the regular season with a 9-2-3 record and a no. 4 national ranking.
