Flock leads Vikes to opening win

ABBOTSFORD - Kendra Flock scored twice in the first half to help the UVic Vikes begin their Canada West title defence with a 3-1 victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford.

Flock, who co-captained Canada's FISU entry this summer, staked the Vikes to an early lead with a goal in the seventh minute of play.

Sarah Clark followed suit 10 minutes later scoring in the 17th minute. Flock struck again in the 30th minute to record her 18th career goal as the Vikes took a comfortable 3-0 lead into half time.

The Vikes held the Cascades to just one goal as Ellen Kuyer eluded Canada West All Star 'keeper Stephanie Parker's shutout bid with eight minutes left to play. Parker posted four saves as the Vikes out-shot the home side 12-9.

The Vikes return to Centennial Stadium next weekend for their first 2009 home stand against the Calgary Dinos on Sept. 19 before taking on the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sunday.
