Vikes round out road swing with 1-1 draw

REGINA, SK – The UVic Vikes women's soccer team battled the Regina Cougars to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon, rounding out the opening weekend of 2010 with a 0-0-2 record.

BOXSCORE

After a frustrating and scoreless first half, Vikes head coach #Tracy David# made five key substitutions that sparked an offensive onslaught.

Midfield substitute #Jacqueline Harrison# had an immediate impact and with 2:45 played in the second frame took advantage of a Regina defensive miscue and beat Cougars goalkeeper Michelle Anderson with a low drive for the 1-0 lead.

Vikes 'keeper #Tanya Jones# was en route to posting her first shutout of the season until Regina freshman Catherine Lukan netted the equalizer with 15 minutes left to play.

Despite a relentless offensive drive by the Vikes including two blocked shots in injury time, Anderson held on for the draw.

The Vikes now travel to Abbotsford next weekend in search of their first win of the season. Kickoff against the Fraser Valley Cascades is scheduled for 12:00pm on Saturday, September 18.
