First half offensive onslaught secures victory for undefeated Vikes

The No. 6 nationally ranked University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball remained undefeated, improving to 8-0 in conference play, with a 90-59 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday night in Alberta.

#Ryan MacKinnon# of Comox, B.C., notched 23 points along with three steals and an assist in the victory, while #Mike Berg# of Burnaby, B.C., added 14 points and seven boards.

Also in double-digit scoring for UVic were #Michael Acheampong# of Toronto with 14, #Reese Pribilsky# of Victoria with 11 and #Zac Andrus# of Vashon Island, Wa., with 10. Andrus also added six assists and a steal. #Pierce Anderson# of Calgary added eight rebounds and six points in a strong outing.

Dominyc Coward led Lethbridge, now 4-4, with 13 points and eight rebounds. Logan Reiter was six-for-eight from the floor and also had a team-high 13 points.

But the Pronghorns had no answer for the hot-shooting Vikes which were 53 per cent from the field - 59.4 per cent in the opening half. UVic drained 10 of 11 three-point attempts in the first half.

The Vikes stormed out to a 27-13 lead after the opening quarter and led 53-29 at the halftime break.

UVic resumes conference play Jan. 6 and 7 in the new year when they host the top two teams in the East Division in the Canada west, the Saskatchewan Huskies (5-2) and Alberta Golden Bears (6-2).
