Host Spartans blank Vikes in Canada West semifinal

Nov. 4: Canada West Semifinal - Trinity Western 3 UVic 0

Nikki Wright, Alicia Tesan and Daniela Gerig scored as the Trinity Western Spartans ended the national-championship hopes of the University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team in a 3-0 loss on Friday night in Langley, B.C., in the Canada West semifinal.

BOX SCORE

UVic will face UBC in Saturday's third-place game at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Thunderbirds were defeated in the first semifinal 1-0 by Alberta in a game decided by kicks from the penalty spot.

"We did not have a good game in the back and they pressured us all over the park," said Vikes head coach #Tracy David#. "And they were quick to everything and they were very good at anticipating."

"Our back four was under severe pressure the entire game," David said. "They outmuscled us, they outworked us, and they put a fine team performance on the day."

Trinity scored once in the opening half in what proved to be the game-winner as Wright netted her goal in the 20th minute, streaking up the left wing, deking around Vikes goalkeeper Stephanie Parker (Chemainus, B.C.) and placing it in the net.

Tesan scored on a high lob over Parker in the 59th minute and Gerig scored the Spartans' third goal off a rebound to seal the victory.

Parker made two saves in the loss, while Kristen Funk earned the shutout victory for the Spartans.

"We did not press well today as a unit it was a tough game all around. We fought hard though," David added. "Going into tomorrow against UBC, both teams are really disappointed with quite a let down and we have a bronze medal to play for so we're looking to win it."

Trinity Western hosts Alberta in the Canada West championship final at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Both teams advance to the CIS national women's soccer championship in Montreal Nov. 10-13, hosted by the McGill Martlets.
